IWCB and Vinul.ro Magazine: Bucharest, the Capital of Wine and Gastronomy, 24th of May – 23rd of June 2017

Between 25th and 28th of May, at ARCUB Hanul Gabroveni (Gabroveni Inn) in the heart of Bucharest Old City will take place the judging of all 1600 wines that compete for International Wine Contest Bucharest (IWCB) medals. The appreciation will be made by 32 foreign jurors and 24 Romanian specialists. The complete list can be accessed here.

IWCB will be accept samples registration until April 28th, 2017 and samples delivery until May, 05th.
Results will be posted on-line on www.iwcb.ro/en   June 2nd, 2017.
The winners will be awarded June 6th at The Gala Ceremony in Bucharest.
Producers can register online or by email, download the forms at http://www.iwcb.ro/en/download-email-registration-forms/

IWCB, Vinul.ro magazine, GastroArt.ro and Rare Foods Services, with the support of ARCUB (The Cultural Center of Bucharest Municipality) and PMB (The Bucharest City Hall) and partners from mass media and HoReCa, organizes  a series of events for public and communicators.
Wine is and must be an impotant subject for those interested in gastronomy, economics, photography, fashion or just for those interested in social positioning.

  • 27th-28th of May, at Hanul Gabroveni, those interested will taste (based on prior reservations confirmed) the same 1600 samples judged at IWCB, in the International Wines Open – an unprecedented event in Romania
  • 27th of May, takes place (also at Hanul Gabroveni) Bloggers and Wines Festival – also a first run event, where almost 30 online influencers (specialized in gastronomy, wine, tourism, fashion, photography) will present their activities at few glasses from their favourite wines of each of them- and they will meet live with readers
  • 7th– 8th of June, at the same Hanul Gabroveni, will take place the Ist Gastronomy and Wine Congress from Romania – a gathering of professionists in the field and communicators
  • In parallel with these events, during one month, starting from 24th of May, over 25 restaurants from Bucharest, of different culinary profiles, from different areas, will promote to their clients, a special offer, food and wine recipes.

International Wine Contest Bucharest (IWCB), cel mai important concurs internaţional de vinuri din Europa de Est, pregăteşte cea de-a XIV-a Ediţie

Bucureşti, 6 martie 2017: Oficiul Naţional al Viei şi Produselor Vitivinicole (ONVPV) anunţă o nouă ediţie a Concursului Internaţional de Vinuri Bucureşti (IWCB), ce se va desfăşura în perioada 25-28 mai la Bucureşti. www.iwcb.ro

IWCB se desfăşoară sub înaltul patronaj al Organizaţiei Internaţionale a Viei şi Vinului (OIV). http://oiv.int/en/agenda

După o atentă monitorizare, începând cu anul 2016, IWCB a fost acceptat în „superliga” Fedetaţiei Marilor Concursuri Internaţionale de Vinuri şi Băuturi Spirtoase – VINOFED. http://www.vinofed.com/en/category/calendrier/

 

Şi în 2017 înregistrarea probelor se va face fără taxă pentru producătorii de vinuri.

 

Ca o primă noutate, în 2017, fiecare comisie de jurizare (panel) va fi formată din 7 juraţi (şi nu din 5 ca în majoritatea concursurilor), din care 4 specialişti străini în fiecare panel. Prin acest efort acurateţea evaluării IWCB ajunge la un nivel nemaiatins până în prezent.

Asociaţia Degustătorilor Autorizaţi din România (ADAR) desemnează, cu autoritate, degustătorii evaluatori români, asigură securizarea probelor şi parcurgerea corectă a tuturor procedurilor impuse de regulament.

 

„Idealul ar fi ca IWCB să fie folosit de autorități, valorificat de asociațiile de producători, de instituțiile de învățământ superior pentru a culege date prelucrate şi pentru a-și expune mesajele, materialele științifice, în fața unei comunități compacte, valoroase, greu de „atins” în mod individual. Beneficiile şi economiile sunt evidente.”afirmă Cătălin Păduraru, CEO IWCB.

Sincronizarea cu noile tendinţe mondiale este dovedită de IWCB prin introducerea spre evaluare a vinurilor „eco” în grupe distincte.

În anul 2016, au intrat în competiţie 1495 de probe din 32 de ţări producătoare, probele producătorilor din străinătate reprezentând 52% din totalul înscrierilor. 238 de operatori români şi străini au trimis probe la IWCB.

IWCB este principalul instrument de calibrare și comunicare pentru piața vinului din această parte a globului, cu influențe benefice majore pentru toți producătorii de vin din lume, dar şi pentru economia românească.

Conform datelor oferite de APEV (Asociaţia Producătorilor şi exportatorilor de Vin din România), la sfârşitul anului 2015, România ocupă:

  • a 5-a poziţie în UE după suprafeţele cu viţă de vie (după Spania, Franţa, Italia, Portugalia) şi este în primele 15 ţări la nivel mondial
  • a 5-a poziţie în UE după cantitatea de struguri produsă (după Italia, Spania, Franţa, Germania)
  • a 6-a poziţie în UE la producţia de vin (după Italia, Franţa, Spania, Portugalia, Germania)

Conform aceleiaşi surse, la sfârşitul anului 2015, producţia de vin a României era de 3,627 milhl, iar consumul de vin în România atingea 3,990 milhl.

Un concurs de asemenea calibru atrage atenţia asupra României, cu efecte imediate de imagine, dar şi economice.

450 medals at The International Wine Contest Bucharest 2016

Wines from Romania, Republic of Moldavia and Italy are on the top. Romania and Republic of Moldavia obtained the only two Great Gold Medals given this year

Bucharest, 10th of June 2016: Wednesday, 8th of June this year, at Bragadiru Palace from Bucharest, took place the International Wine Contest Bucharest 2016 Gala. This year’s edition of the competition, the first one itinerant, was hosted in Focsani, Vrancea County.

“IWCB accomplishes the mission to be an entity of hierarching and promoting quality wines, both in the benefit of the consumers and producers. Regarding the competition’s evolution, our main goal is that at the following editions, to find and impose improvements accepted by OIV ( International Organisation of Vine and Wine) during the evaluation process. Also, we are glad to contribute in this way at the reentry of Romania in the superior league of the world of wine, in terms of production and market ” says Catalin Paduraru, CEO IWCB.

About the winners

The Great Gold Medals from IWCB 2016 were received by a Romanian wine (Tamaioasa Romaneasca, vintage 1975, obtained in Statiunea Pietroasele) and a Moldavian one (Chardonnay  vintage 2013 Botrytis, a product of Château Vartely).

The most appreciated rose dry wine – C’est soir Rose (Cabernet Sauvignon) 2015 from  Domeniile Lungu, Romania.

The most appreciated red dry wines – Encore Syrah 2012 from KATARZYNA ESTATE LTD, Bulgaria and St. Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 de la Wakefield/ Taylors Wines, Australia.

Romania obtained 187 medals (41,5% from the total number of medals):

  • 1 Great Gold Medal
  • 59 Gold Medals (36% from the total number of Gold Medals)
  • 127 Silver Medals (45% from the total number of Silver Medals.

The best importer from Romania is also in 2016, VINEXPERT with 8 Gold Medals and 7 Silver Medals.

International Wine Contest Bucharest- 4 days of judging, 1495 samples from 32 countries, jurors from 19 countries

The number of international jurors:

  • 21st foreign jurors
  • 16th Romanian jurors

IWCB 2016 gathered:

  • Mr. Jean Claude Ruf (France)- OIV observer
  • Mr. Richard Pfister (Switzerland)- warrant representative from VINOFED
  • Mr. Ted Lelekas (Greece)- vicepresident FIJEV

All 37 jurors came from 19th countries such as: France, SUA, UK, Republic of Moldavia, Romania, Germany, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Russia, Spain, Serbia, Greece, Australia, Switzerland, Poland, Brazil, Croatia, Denmark.

The total number of registered samples: 1495 (self-imposed target), from which:

  • 48% samples from Romania (717 samples)
  • 52% samples from abroad (778 samples)

From all those 1495 samples, 1396 were still wines, 66 sparkling and 33 spirituous.

The total number of countries whose samples competed: 32 (Abhazia, Argentina, Australia, Azerbaidjan, Bulgaria, Chile, Ciprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, France, Georgia, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Republic of Moldavia, Macedonia, New Zeeland, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Russia, Slovenia, Turkey, SUA, Uzbekistan, Kosovo and South Africa).

The top of the competing countries regarding the number of samples:

  • 1. Romania- 717

  • White wines: 630 (45% of total still wines)
  • Rose wines: 155 (11% of total still wines)
  • Red wines: 611 (44% of total still wines)

The structure of still wines entered in the competition, regarding the residual sugar:

  • Dry wines: 1029 (74% of total still wines)
  • Medium dry wines: 228 (16% of total still wines)
  • Medium sweet wines: 66 (5% of total still wines)
  • Sweet wines: 73 (5% of total still wines)

Romania registered 717 samples in the competition, from which:

  • Still wines: 691
  • Sparkling wines: 19
  • Spirituous: 7

IWCB take into account the new realities of the global economy and change the paradigm of high caliber competitions, taking on the task of opening new roads for worldwide wine industry.

Since 2016, IWCB becomes an itinerant contest which this year, will take place in the middle of the largest region of Romanian wine industry, Vrancea – aka Vine and Wine Country. This fact give to the jurors, journalists and representatives of the OIV the chance to get introduced to this important wine region of Romania.

Landmarks IWCB 2015

70 million of wine lovers, online readers from all over the world will know the wines awarded at International Wine Contest Bucharest 2015  (IWCB) due to Wine Spectator (www.winespectator.com).

To this, it might be added visits on partner sites/publications from Romania or abroad.

IWCB, the strongest contest of the South–East and Central Europe catches attention by the two new records:

  • 27 participant countries, of which 13 are new;
  • Almost 1000 samples sent for competition, 903 registered;

The appetite of the neighboring countries to be present within the contest proves the influence IWCB started to have around this part of the world.

A rigurous examination, the presence of some experienced jurors both Romanian (10 members) and abroad (15 members), of the OIV observer, of an evaluation regulation, the verification and control methods increase public and wine producers’ confidence in the fairness in terms of hierarchy as IWCB symbols are reference for the consumer and argument for sale.

The origin countries where jurors come from are: Switzerland, Israel, Moldova Republic, Italy, Russia, Serbia, Australia, Poland, Austria, Portugal, France, USA.

As an observer from the International Organization of Vine and Wine, Mario de la Fuente from Spain attended, the Head of the OIV Viticulture Commission.

IWCB aims to assume a special status in a short time so that it may become the first free international wine contest in the world and leader in the elite „classic”contests.

 

Distribution of the samples by countries

  • 389 samples from Romania representing 44% of the total number;
  • 504 samples abroad representing 56% of the total number

 

The number of the operators who registered samples: 167, of which:

  • 67 Romanian producers;
  • 93 foreign producers:
  • 7 importers registered samples from 56 foreign producers;

280 medals were awarded (for 31%  of the samples within competition), 173 were Golden Medals and 107 were  Silver Medals.

484 samples got at least 82 points, meaning 54% of the total juried samples;

The highest score for a dry white wine, younger than  2009, was obtained by Temjanica 2014 Special Selection de la Tikves Winery, Macedonia.

The highest score for a dry red wine, younger than  2009, was obtained by the blend , Syrah, Carignan – Vino de Unicornio 738,  Chile (Tak Fung Holdings – from Hong Kong)

The highest score for a dry rose wine, younger than  2009, was obtained by the blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Feteasca Neagra 2014, Strabun, producer Vinum Capidava / The Darie Winery, Romania.

The greatest average for a white, Romanian variety – Feteasca Alba 2014 LIVIA – Mera Com/ The Girboiu Winery , Romania.

The greatest average for a red wine, Romanian variety – Feteasca Neagra 2012 Domenii, Casa de Vinuri Cotnari, Romania.

The greatest average for a collection wine (the production year: until 2009)

  • Pinot Gris 1980, SCDVV Murfatlar, Romania
  • Tamaioasa Romaneasca 1971, SCDVV Pietroasa, Romania

The brandy with the highest average

  • Miorita 1985, Vincon Vrancea, Romania
  • Miorita, 1990, Vincon Vrancea, Romania

The highest average for the sparkling wines: Prosecco Rosalia extradry, Agricola Giusti, Italia.

The best selector from Romania – Vinexpert: 15 Golden Medals and 7 Silver Medals

The wine producer with the most awarded medals is Casa de Vinuri Cotnari, Romania

The country with the most medals awarded, after Romania: The Moldova Republic: 43 medals

As it became one of the most important contests in Central and Eastern Europe, IWCB has reached all its targets.

NEW! Extended registration deadline!

News 2014

The deadline regarding the samples registration within International Wine Contest 2014 has been extended. Therefore, samples may be registered by 14 May 2014.

Both samples and original documents must be sent at ONVPV (The National Office for Vine and Vitivinicultural Products) by 15 May 2014.

Normal Registration Fees  1st February –  14 May, 2014:

  • 1-5 entries 70 euro/ entries
  • 6-10 entries 60 euro/ entries
  • 11-15 entries 50 euro/ entries
  • 16-30 entries 45 euro/ entries
  • 30+ entries 40 euro/ entries, negotiable

Late arrivals  15  – 17 May, 2014: 

  • 100 euro/ entry

*Prices not including VAT.

Thus, our aim is to encourage the producers, importers and the advertising agencies in order to prove that we are an attentive and flexible partner.

IWCB 2014 – AWARDS

As in every edition, since 2011, IWCB brings at several firsts.

Because to judging is an act of responsibility, the results resonates immediately in the „palpable” area of the economic exercise, IWCB team chose to invite, as the members of the jury, experts tasters which representing the markets tempting for any producer, opinion maker from these markets. As for 2014, the board of experts has been strengthened, besides evaluators from U.S., Switzerland, Italy, France, Germany, UK, with judges from Poland and China !
